Aerospace and defense company Lockheed Martin (LMT) secured a $1.81 billion contract for design and development related to the modernization of F-35 combat aircraft, a statement issued by the Department of Defense said.

The contract is for design maturation and development of capabilities in support of the F-35 Lightning II Phase 2.3 Pre-Modernization for the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and non-US Department of Defense participants, the DOD said Friday.

It added that the work would be performed in Fort Worth, TX., and is expected to be completed in August 2026.

Fiscal 2019 research, development, test and evaluation for Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps and non-US Department of Defense participant funds of $99 million is to be obligated at the time of award, none of which is to expire at the end of the current fiscal year, the Pentagon added.

The contract combines purchases for the Air Force – worth $732.5 million or 40.5%, the Navy, worth $371.5 million or 20.5%, and the Marine Corps, worth $346 million or 19.1% – and non-US Department of Defense participants, worth $358.6 million, or 19.8%, the statement added.
